When assigned with the task of creating a series of three for her metal class final, SPU freshman and art major Jordan A. went above and beyond. After careful consideration and numerous sketches, Jordan decided to take on the challenge of not only developing her own designs for her own jewelry set, but also making it entirely by hand from recycled materials.

Although all of the materials needed for the final were provided by the class, Jordan took it upon herself to visit Seattle ReCreative in order to find the perfect supplies for her project. Seattle ReCreative is a non-profit craft store, located in both Georgetown and Greenwood, dedicated to keeping usable art materials out of Seattle landfills. They offer a wide variety of fabric, yarn, paints, vintage materials, wood, metal, and much more! Art classes and party rentals are also offered at both locations; however, none of this appealed to Jordan because she was on a mission to find the perfect stones her project. After deciding on buying a jar full of mother of pearl, Jordan was ready to begin working on her masterpiece.
“The entire process took over two weeks” says Jordan while remembering her time in the studio. Many of her classmates can recall seeing her working away in the art studio for hours at a time. “I would leave the studio late at night, come back the next morning, and she would still be there”, says one of her peers. “Jordan lived in the metals studio”, says another. In the end however, all of her hard work paid off.
In addition to the pair of earrings, Jordan also created matching rings from the same recycled materials, completing her set of three. Jordan walked out of class on the day of her final with an A and a new set of jewelry.
